In an age where contemporary reggae often bows to the seasoned, Mortimer presents a remarkable tapestry of sound, a vibrant fusion of conscious rhythms woven with threads of motivation, introspection, love, and joy.

After five long years, Mortimer's highly anticipated debut album, From Within, has finally graced our ears, marking a compelling evolution from his Fight the Fight EP. Emerging from rural Whitehall, Mortimer's journey has taken him from church choirs to performing at major festivals, showcasing his soulful voice and timeless messages that captivate audiences worldwide. As he beautifully states, “I do music because it is my first love... It’s about a message—love, hope, kindness, selflessness, and sharing a piece of myself with others.” This passion resonates through every track.

The album kicks off with “In My Time,” featuring Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, a stirring anthem that fuses Marley’s fiery delivery with Mortimer’s soothing yet powerful vocals. This collaboration reflects on societal evolution, addressing social media and contemporary challenges while maintaining an uplifting tone that feels like a rallying cry.

Introspection is at the album’s core. In “Not a Day Goes By,Mortimer delves into themes of solitude and contentment, offering a serene meditation on life’s quieter moments. The true standout, “Whole Heap,” showcases his gift for weaving profound insights from his rural roots into deeply resonant messages that strike a chord with listeners.

But From Within is more than mere reflection; it skillfully balances the past and present, love and opportunity. Mortimer excels at crafting modern riddims, incorporating unique samples that guide listeners on a rich auditory journey, perfectly encapsulating the album’s essence.

Still, the album’s theme was a bit unpredictable. The summarized endeavor feels deliberate, and while the instrumentals and backing vocals are undeniably stellar, the artist's broad thematic sweep detracts from the overall impact. In striving to address every conceivable subject, the work ultimately lacks the focused depth it could have achieved. The singer weaves a rich sonic tapestry that is truly impressive.

However, the exploration of diverse topics imparts an unfinished essence to the work, hinting that certain songs were not given the chance to emerge as standout singles in their own right, instead depending on the broader context of the project for support. Trading off some depth and cohesion in pursuit of a broader scope. Despite the above-mentioned closing with “Where Would I Be,” the album concludes on a contemplative note that feels earned. Mortimer isn’t just singing about life; he’s sharing his own journey and expressing gratitude with heartfelt humility.

In summary, Mortimer’s From Within offers a compelling mix of motivation, introspection, and vibrant reggae sounds. While it may not yet be considered a classic, this album reveals the depth, charisma, and undeniable passion of one of reggae’s most engaging contemporary voices. Each track paves the way for his recognition as a future standout in the genre.
